Electronic Health Record (EHR) vs. Electronic Medical Record (EMR)

Electronic Health Record (EHR) vs. Electronic Medical Record (EMR)

Since 2004 we’ve heard the two terms ‘EMR’ and ‘EHR’ and have used them interchangeably.

Is this correct? Do they mean the same thing?
Absoutely not.

There has been a misconception for years concerning this issue. It was not until recently, when the US government announced that it is an EHR that medical providers must purchase.

Now what’s the difference?
An Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is a system that enables physicians’ to have electronic patient charts. This system is solely for the physician, therefore, the legal record of a patient encounter is owned by the physician. The EMR is not interactive, and all patient information is stored within the physician’s computer.

An Electronic Health Record (EHR) is a system that focuses on the word ‘Health,’ which implies the scope of a patient’s well-being. The most important term that you must associate with an EHR is interconnectivity. An EHR has the ability to transfer data to other EHRs, hospitals, labs. It is about the patient receiving the best care and is not dependent on the physical location of the patient.

For example: A man named Brian resides in Florida and is on vacation in Colorado. Brian has a bad fall while skiing. He broke arm and the impact of him falling has caused him to become unconscious. Brian is rushed to the ER, however, the physician cannot provide medication yet because the physician is unsure if Brian has specific allergies.

An EHR is the system that is able to transfer Brian’s records to the ER in Colorado. An EMR cannot.

With the HITECH Act, the government has announced that physicians will receive financial incentives if they choose to implement and meaningfully use an EHR by 2014. If physicians choose NOT to conform, they will receive penalties commencing in 2015.
Throughout the HITECH Act the term ‘EHR’ was mentioned well over 100 times and EMR was not. This illustrates that people must begin to use the appropriate word when discussing electronic records.

Although ‘EMR’ is more popular of a term, ‘EHR’ is considered the proper term when discussing a system that is: connected, where patients have access and where physicians can add to the records.

My company VOCIS (http://www.vocisinc.com/) is going to start EMR/EHR services very soon, if you are looking for EMR/EHR service for your Medical Practice then feel free to email us your query at contact@vocistrans.com

Thanks.

Doctors & Medical Professionals - how to promote your practice on net.

Dear Medical professional - do you want to promote your business on the Internet ? The following would be my recommendation to get started:

1. Website: The first thing you need to promote your practice on the Internet is a Medical website. (The good examples of medical websites are these: www.nairinternalmedicine.com, www.njlapbariatrics.com, www.primetimetherapy.com, www.uralluring.com , www.bluegrasscardiology.com )

Provide your staff, services your offer, seminar, support info and contact details on the website. Adding appointment form is a plus.

2. Search engine optimization: Doing search engine submission and just having a medical website is not enough for your medical business. You have to get customers to find you on internet. To do that, your medical website has to use certain techniques and technologies that make search engines rank your medical website high on their results list when your customers do a search foryour kind of business. That's " search engine optimization". There are some steps to followed to get a good ranking on search engines. 1. Website modification: This step includes adding optimized content to all pages in the medical website. This is necessary because targeted keywords have to be addedin the right density at the right places. 2. Adding Relevant Meta and Title tags to your website pages. 3. Link building: Link Building is an important part of Search Engine Optimization, and is a practice of getting other websites to link to yours. Link Building with quality backlinks is amongst many important aspects considered by search engines, while determining the rankings of a site. Therefore, creating backlinks is one of the most important tasks you can undertake to promote your website with the search engines.

3. Pay-per-click: Set-up "pay per click" account with google, yahoo & msn and start experimenting with the effectiveness of various keywords. You can fix your daily/weekly/monthly spends depending on the amount of money you would like to spend. In any form of advertising, speed is of the essence and all Pay per Click (PPC) advertising campaigns can be launched quickly, just log in, define your budget, set your keywords and off you go. With the right set-up, you will see the benefits immediately.

4. Directory submission: Directories a few years back was the favorite for many people when searching for certain types of services, stores, and websites, however, today search engines have taken over this area. This certainly does not mean that directories are a thing of the past. Search engines love directories. Of course, you cannot depend on traffic from the directories but you can depend on search engines picking up your link that was found in the various directories. This will improve your rankings among the search engines since you will have more inbound links to your website.

5. Blogging: Create a Blog on your website- put in user friendly content that relates to your medical profession. Remember good content attracts people.. This should work as a good 'pull' mechanism.

6. Profile on Social Networking websites: If it works "offline" then it would also work online. The citizens of the Internet, specifically the entrepreneurs of online business, have seen the power of social networking. Because of this, they have developed methods on how to utilize this to their advantage. A method they have developed is called business bookmarking which is a variation of the ever so popular social bookmarking. It utilizes the power of networking online but this time in the context of businesses. It has become a very effective method for both small and big businesses who want to reach to people all over the world. With the help of the network of business bookmarking, businesses were given the opportunity to reach more people and have a bigger audience. Just like networking in the real world, the basic rule still applies -- it is all about having the same interests. In the Internet, online businesses who have the same interest would contact each other. If all goes well, they would forge a partnership, an alliance if you may call it, to boost their status. Some wellknow social websites are myspace, facebook, linkedin, twitter.
